SEE SUPPLEMENT! The Linder residence is an award-winning eco-conscious, mid-century modern home in retro-cool SoSco. It was originally designed by prominent twin brother architects, Arthur and Charles Schreiber. The twins are highly coveted for their rare mid-century modern homes. Iconic Schreiber trademarks include low-slung roofline, fenestrated block pattern at entry, tapered spear-like patio posts, vaulted ceilings with exposed beams and walls of windows. This home was built in 1961 and underwent significant modernization and expansion in 2007-2008, under the guided hands of Joe David of JoBuilt Construction. The home and its impressive gardens have been featured in Dwell Magazine and on the Modern Phoenix Home Tour in 2008 and 2015. The home was a recipient of the Scottsdale Environmental Design Award in 2010. Joe David of JoBuilt Construction and Steve Martino, landscape architect, worked in tandem to create this one-of-a-kind home + garden.
Joe David is sought-after for his thoughtful contemporary remodels. The home was re-designed like a piece of art. Joe was able to maintain the home's integrity, while thoroughly modernizing the floorplan and finishes. The home was taken down to the studs, which allowed for the home's mechanical systems to receive much-needed updates. Homes of this era rarely have eco-efficiencies of this caliber. A 4.1 KW PV solar system, by American Solar, was installed in 2008 (owned, not leased). The system covers over half of the home's current energy needs. The panels are constantly harvesting the sun's energy, to produce power year-round. The owners wanted to reduce energy consumption further, so they installed a high-efficiency electric water heater and HVAC system (with all new ductwork). A new electrical panel was installed, along with new electrical wiring throughout the home. Icynene spray-in foam insulation was added to all the interior walls and ceilings. The plumbing lines and foam roof were also updated in 2008. All the lighting throughout is upgraded. The concrete floors throughout are micro-topped in a beautiful sand gray color, which flows throughout the main house.
Steve Martino is recognized as one of the top landscape architects in the world. One trip to the Phoenix Botanical Gardens will show you why Martino's naturalistic designs are so highly-regarded. The high-design desertscape emphasizes the home's architectural features. The front courtyard was created to offer an outdoor living room, which virtually expands the home's livable space. Block aalls and metal gates create carefully-controlled views and look as though they were original design features. Don't miss the playful inlayed glass marbles in the salt finished patio and carport slabs. The 2 car carport is an original architectural feature, with its tapered block accent columns and planter.
Enjoy resort-style indoor/outdoor living in an authentic mid-century modern Schreiber house that has been completely renovated with floor plan modifications that maintain architectural integrity. The front room is a flexible space, which can function as a living room or dining room. Currently, a unique paper note chandelier is the focal point of the room, which is used to entertain large gatherings. All exterior doors and windows have been replaced with Western Window systems. The original front window wall is modernized with custom low-e, dual pane windows that are finished with anodized aluminum frames. The window wall matches the commercial glass front door. All of the interior wall surfaces feature a smooth texture and zero-VOC, soy-based paint. Great care was taken to using only natural, renewable and toxin-free materials, when possible.
The kitchen was completely re-designed and expanded with high-end finishes including sustainably-sourced flat panel bamboo cabinetry, snow white quartz counters and concrete floors. A Kenmore Pro stainless steel appliance package includes a 6 burner gas cooktop, counter-depth refrigerator, dishwasher, wall oven and warming drawer. Additional appliances include Kitchenaid wine refrigerator, Miele steamer and Miele built-in espresso machine. The kitchen island is finished with sleek white cabinetry and provides casual seating. The artisan-crafted recycled glass tile backsplash adds a pop of color to the neutral contemporary kitchen. Other perks include dual basin sink, R/O system, pantry cabinets and an eat-in area that is perfectly-scaled for a café table and chairs.
The family room is open to the kitchen and overlooks the epic backyard through a newly-designed custom floor-to-ceiling window wall. The lower casement windows open for ventilation. A structural dividing wall has been removed, which allows the front and back living spaces to seamlessly connect. Recessed can lights provides beautiful night-lighting; the space maintains gorgeous natural light throughout the day. The original ceiling beams have been soda-blasted to reveal their true beauty creating a perfect contrast to the smooth white ceiling.
The master suite is re-configured to maximize the space. The master closet was relocated, in order to expand the master bathroom. The master features mooth walls, concrete floors, built-in speakers, modern ceiling fan, bedside sconce lighting and a new sliding glass door with remote-controlled shade. The master bathroom features a terrazzo and glass mosaic tiled shower with high-end rain head and body spray shower panel tower, wall-mounted double vanity with dual recycled glass vessel sinks and a separate water closet with Toto dual flush toilet. There is an en-suite garden that is a super private retreat.
The 2nd bedroom was converted into a large walk-in closet, with walls of built-ins, a central dresser and recessed lighting. The 2nd bedroom features 2 closets and a private exit to the rear yard. A full house Sonos sound system is housed in the bedroom's media closet.
The hall bathroom features glass-mosaic lined floor and shower surround, with classic white subway tile lining the walls up to the ceiling. A glass vessel sink, sits below wall-mounted faucet. Contemporary wall sconces, Kohler jetted bathtub and Toto dual flush toilet finish the space. The laundry facility has been relocated to the hallway closet with stacked blue-gray Kenmore HE washer and dryer.
A new block-built guest retreat is located across a breezeway from the main house. The space functions as a guest quarters or 3rd bedroom. It has a high-efficiency mini-split A/C system, eco-friendly bamboo flooring, a ¾ bathroom with glass mosaic-tiled shower, high-end rain head and body spray shower panel tower, wall-mounted glass sink and separate water closet. The sliding glass door offers a view to the amazing backyard and pool.
A collection of desert-derived plants mingle with a simple lawn, towering pine trees and vegetable garden. Texture and shadows make the gardens stand out, day and night. The 8 foot tall rear privacy wall is finished in a striking shade of red, with a series of decorative wall sconces. The open patio space highlights the minimalist concrete bench and matching concrete pool fountain. A motorized, retractable pool cover (with decorative metal and wood bench) helps keep the pool safe and clean. The West side of the yard has a storage shed.
This house sits on one of the most sought-after streets in Village Grove, surrounded by amazing ranch and mid-century modern ranch homes. The Village Grove neighborhood, constructed in the 1950s and 1960s, has almost 1000 houses. But fewer than 20 of this modern elevation were built. Early 1950s ranches in Village Grove tracts 1-6 are listed on the Scottsdale and National Register of Historic Places. They were designed by Arthur and Charles Schreiber and built by Allied Construction. Of the many elevation options offered, this particular modern sprawling ranch was the most expensive at $17,500, when other ranches were $15,200-$16,500. This specific Schreiber for Allied elevation design is featured in Alan Hess's coffee table book, "The Ranch House."
